Tape the snakeskin onto the cutting mat so that it won’t move while you are cutting it. It is best to use a tape that is strong but not completely binding, as this will remove some of the scales on the skin. Measure the leather belt you are going to use. Cut the snakeskin to 10 inches longer than that of the waist. Use the rotary cutting knife to cut the snakeskin. This tool is used because the round and easily moving knife won’t rip the skin. It is a very delicate skin.

Next, you will match the snakeskin width to the same width of the belt buckle you have chosen unless you want to have a wrap-around effect. If this is what you desire then cut the snakeskin to be one inch wider than the belt.

Set up the sewing machine. Place the leather foot and needle into the machine. These specific items are used for working with leather. The foot is especially made to keep leather from moving because any slight sliding will cause damage to the leather when the needle hits it.

The end of the belt that will not attach to the buckle must be shaped. Normally, belts have a half-diamond or rounded shape at the end. You can make your belt end any shape you desire. You can even clasp a metal end to it.

Place the cow skin onto the cutting mat. Cut it to the same lengths as the snakeskin. Use the razor knife to cut the cow skin because it is a tough material that can rip and cut unevenly if not cut properly.

Adhere the snakeskin to the cow skin using the double-sided tape. If you wanted the wrap-around belt, tape both the top part of the snakeskin and the wrapped around part to ensure immobility while sewing. Sewing on the edge will allow the thread to go through both the top and bottom layers of snakeskin.

Sew the belt carefully on the edges. Be sure to sew slowly so that the line is straight and the stitches are evenly spaced.

Use the varnish on the snakeskin when the sewing is done. This will keep the snakeskin fresh and shiny. It won’t scale or fade.

Use the rivet snaps to attach the belt buckle to the new belt. Hole punch three to four holes one inch from each other from about one to two inches from the end without the buckle.

Tips

Practice sewing on a small square of the snakeskin and leather so you know you can do it before you try to sew the actual belt.
